Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. During WWII the United States developed and used several versions of metal cased Anti-Tank mines, starting with the M1, followed by the M1A1 and finally the M4. These did have a downside however, in that the steel casing made them very easy to find with mine detecting equipment due to their large magnetic profile. There were non-magnetic alloys that could be used, but would have been significantly more expensive and harder to work with than the usual steel.
As a result they developed the plastic housing M5 anti-tank mine, which used as little metal as possible, rendering it undetectable by the standard means. This is a lovely deactivated inert version, which still has the original web carry handle, though the deactivated fuze is not included. The plastic housing is in good shape, but does show the expected damage and deterioration from being 75+ years old.
Unloaded or dummy grenades, artillery shell casings, and similar devices, which are cut or drilled in an BATF-approved manner so that they cannot be used as ammunition components for destructive devices, are not considered NFA weapons. This example is in total compliance and is NOT AVAILABLE FOR EXPORT.
A very nice example of a rare WWII Anti-Tank mine, the first that we have had! Ready to display!
The M5 is a United States minimum metal plastic cased anti-tank blast mine. The mine uses either a glass or porcelain internal case with a protective outer case, made from felt impregnated with asphalt and tar paper. The mine uses a chemical fuze rather than a mechanical one. It contains either 5.4 lb (2.4 kg) of TNT or 5.7 lb (2.6 kg) of tetrytol (a mixture of tetryl and TNT). It was used during the Second World War. The practice version, designated as M9, was also produced.
