Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This is an exceptional Italian Army Officer's Model 1909 sword from the WWI era, with a unique and exquisite double-etched "straight thrusting" blade. The basket hilt guard is intricately crafted and provides an excellent grip as well as protection for the wielder, those it was not intended for combat use. The all-steel scabbard complements the sword's design and offers protection when not in use. Despite its age, the sword has maintained its character, developing a beautiful and unique patina that only adds to its charm. The level of wear is consistent with its age and use, giving the sword a sense of history and a story to tell.
This sword is truly a sight to behold. The etched panoply of patriotic imagery is a stunning display of craftsmanship though it does have a level of wear that makes it difficult to discern. The black wood grips are in great condition with minor chipping and areas of open grain. The steel scabbard is still solid and has no visible bends or denting. The nickel plating is retained well but there are areas of finish loss, exposing the bare steel to the elements resulting in a brown patination and surface rust.
The WWI nickel-plated blade is not marked and it still retains a nice finish. It has some minor cosmetic spots with some darkening in areas which can be seen in the photos. The blade is unsharpened, as is customary for dress swords. Overall, it is a beautiful sword that is a testament to the skill of its makers and the history it represents.
