Original U.S. Civil War Rare Model 1860 Naval Cutlass by Ames Mfg. Co. with Leather Scabbard - Dated 1862

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. Now this is a rare bird! This is a very nice example of the rarely seen U.S. Naval Cutlass, as used from 1860-1865. The boarding cutlass was derived from the French pattern of 1833, often referred to as a “cullere a pot,” or more commonly called the “soup ladle” weapon. It features all brass mounts, a wood with cord and leather wrapped sword grip, and a nice brass-fitted leather scabbard. The leather is in very good shape, looking to have had a protective coating applied in the past, and the leather blade buffer is present too. These were NEVER bound in brass wire even though there are grooves.

The curved 25 1/4 inch blade's ricasso is marked on one side with the banner style address, which is partly faded, but still legible -

The blade is in very good condition, showing a mostly bright finish, showing some wear and past pitting. It does show signs of cleaning and probably sharpening, and is now about 3/4" shorter than when originally made, with the tip being a bit rounded off. There is an additional inspector D.R. mark on the pommel, indicating inspection by Daniel Reynolds, one of many inspectors working at Ames during the U.S. Civil War. The underside of the guard is marked with rack number 1 7 M / 5 7 8. The guard as a whole was cleaned and lacquered long ago, which has now yellowed and chipped in areas. Some is even on the blade as well.

The included leather scabbard is in very nice condition, with the expected wear from service and age. It has the correct row of brass rivets down the left side of the scabbard, with one on the right side. These are all intact, however the leather is torn a bit at the bottom, and it looks like the tear was partly glued back together. It still has much of the original black finish, though it is cracking and flaking in places, and the brass fittings are oxidized. The scabbards usually rotted away and are very seldom seen, making this a prime example.

Offered in lovely nice collector's condition, original Civil War Naval Cutlasses are getting harder and harder to find every year, especially with the original scabbard! Ready to display!
