Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. Well this is something we don't see every day! A truly MASSIVE 12 Bore fowling piece, featuring a 62 inch long barrel, with an overall length of 78 inches. We thought at first it was some type of "punt gun", but the bore is definitely too small for one of those. It just looks to be an unusually long fowling piece, made very much in the British Brown Bess style. It definitely looks to be at least partially British manufactured, and we believe we can make out faint "CROWN / GR" and "CROWN / V" markings on the barrel, however there is significant powder burn in that area.
The lock is Brown bess style but features only a single screw behind the hammer, while there is a frizzen support bridle going from the pan, so it definitely is not quite to pattern. It is also significantly larger than a standard musket lock. There is a faint maker name on the lock, which we read entirely, but looks to begin with "P" and end with "CAIRN". Hopefully someone familiar with this maker will be able to recognize the name, as it is not one we have seen before.
The fowling piece is quite long, and has an impressive FIVE ramrod pipes under the barrel, holding the wooden ramrod in place. The barrel is held in place by wedges, similar to those used on many 19th century fowling pieces, as well as some British designs from the early 19th century. It is overall in very good condition, considering the age, though there is a good amount of past powder burn on the lock and barrel. The touch hole on the barrel also shows signs of being repaired, so it definitely saw long service.
The stock is full length, but there is a diagonal wood joint about 3 inches above the lowest ramrod pipe, and the stock forward of there looks to have been entirely replaced at some point. It is also possible that it was originally partially stocked, and someone decided to alter it later.
A 12 Bore fowling piece of truly massive size, ready to research and display, if you have the room!
