Item Description
Original Items. One-of-a-Kind. This is a gorgeous group including a great presentation GAR sword and two GAR Belts. This Grand Army of the Republic Presentation Sword was presented to C.H. Miller, who we believe to be Cornelius H. Miller, 6th Regiment, NY Field Artillery. The sword is engraved on both sides of the scabbard with the following inscription:
Commander C.H. MILLER
From his friends
Dec. 1, 1881.
THE SWORD OF METUCHEN
From this, we can assume Miller was Commander of the Metuchen GAR Post, which was organized on May 31st, 1880, and disbanded on January 6th, 1896. We can find references to C.H. Miller being Ordinance Officer in 1883 through newspapers.
The sword is a gorgeous example with a very unique all-brass hilt, with a decoratively patterned grip and monument head pommel. The rain chapes are very decorative with the GAR emblem and coat of arms. The blade is etched with patriotic motifs on the first half of the blade.
The scabbard is engraved on both sides as mentioned and is affixed with decorative brass mounts holding three suspension rings in total.
The included belts are fine examples, the first being a white leather belt with nice embroidering along its length, but the leather and white finish are heavily worn and cracking. One of the sword attachments has broken off and the other is weak. The buckle on this example is the standard GAR buckle featuring crossed swords, cannons, rifles, and an anchor.
The second belt is a nicer variation with gold tape on the exterior layer. The sword attachments have lovely gilt chains that are well-retained and decorated. The belt is in great shape with a GAR Buckle featuring the five-pointed star emblem.
This is a fantastic lot to a GAR Commander, ready for further research and display!
