Original U.S. Indian Wars M1872 Federal Officer’s Chapeau Bicorne Hat by Raymold & Whitlock of New York

Regular price $495.00

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a great "Chapeau De Bras" folding bicorn beaver fur chapeau with original ostrich feathers. It features a bullion cockade with gilt spread wing eagle insignia and Federal Army button. Interior with cream colored silk lining and leather sweatband. Front and back complete with heavy gilt wire fringe (gilt has faded). This example has a worn and faint maker’s name on the interior lining which reads: RAYMOLD & WHITLOCK / 39 WEST NEW YORK. This was a sparsely-known military uniform, equipment, and sword manufacturer who were active from 1881-1898.

The chapeau is in fair condition and will likely only stay unfolded if on a head, so it is recommended to do this upon receiving it to help it begin to regain its original shape. The gilt cockade is in good shape with the Federal button still very shiny, however some of the gold trim has unfortunately been pulled away from its place and is a bit unfurled as shown, but with some work this could possibly be undone. The feathers are still well-retained, and the felt finish on the sides is mostly intact but has lost a bit of material as shown.

The chapeau retains its original leather sweatband which is in good condition but is worn. Some of the interior lining is tearing away and is very weak, but the chapeau is in overall good displayable condition.

A phenomenal example of a well-known model of American Chapeau!
