Item Description
Original Item. Only One Available. The 49th (West Riding) Infantry Division was an infantry division of the British Army. During the Second World War, the division fought in the Norwegian Campaign and in North-western Europe.
This is a gorgeous Battledress uniform for a Captain in the Royal Engineers of the 49th Infantry Division. This could indicate him being in the 228th, 229th, 230th, and 231st Field Companies pre-1941, or the 289th, 294th, 756th, and 757th Field Companies post-1942, or the 23rd Bridging Platoon. This Division saw a lot of changes during the middle years of the war, so the exact sub-unit is hard to track.
The uniform has unit scrolls on both shoulders reading ROYAL ENGINEERS with the Polar Bear patch of the 49th (West Riding) Infantry Division, with a black & red stripe under it, indicating Royal Engineers of this Division. There are three pips on each shoulder board, indicating the rank of Captain, who would be second in command of a company of men.
The uniform has a four-place ribbon bar, with the 1939-1945 Star, the France/German Star, the Defence Medal (United Kingdom), and the War Medal 1939-1945 with a Palm device, which signifies a mention in despatches or a King's Commendation for Brave Conduct. So this Captain certainly saw a heavy amount of service with the 49th Division.
The jacket is in great shape overall with just some minor moth damage in small spots, nothing too serious.
This is a phenomenal uniform to a unit that saw a very heavy amount of combat during World War II. It comes ready for further research and display.
