Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This is a lovely example of a German WWII Heer Army EM-NCO M38 overseas cap (Schiffchen), showing light period wear with a few repairs. The overseas cap, nicknamed in German military slang as Schiffchen, or literally "little ship" as it resembled an up-turned row-boat, was standard issue for all branches of the Heer.
This example is constructed of a field gray (feldgrau) wool exterior, with a very interesting two part liner. It has a heavier olive brown lining on the top and sides, with the bottom 3/4" or so made of a softer cotton rayon blend like the lining of a tunic. This would definitely be quite comfortable, while also keeping the construction relatively sturdy. Sewn in place in the front of the cap is a Heer cap insignia trapezoid constructed of BeVo style machine woven grey and green embroidered threading in the shape of a standard eagle over an embroidered cockade. There is no corps color soutache, so it most likely is for infantry.
The cap does have some small repairs, one around the left side vent grommet, and the other on the lower left bottom. Otherwise, it looks to have seen only light use during the war. We do not see any major mothing or other issues, and the color is well retained.
A very nice M38 overseas cap, ready to add to your collection!
