Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a fantastic example of a Mid-War M1910 Schirmmütze Feldgrau Visor Cap as worn by the Infantry during WWI. The later M1907/1910 version would move to the Feldgrau (Fieldgray) that was seen mostly during the war. The cap is constructed of dark gray wool, which was the standard color for all states. It has Ponceaurot (poppy red) wool piping and red band, which indicate that it was for an infantry soldier. The cap has a great deal of mothing across, especially on the red hat band.

The front of the cap bears a Black, White and Red Reichskokarde (Imperial Cockade) on the front of the crown, with a White and Blue Cockade on the cap band for the state of Bavaria. This example retains its original boiled leather chinstrap, retained by two black buttons on the sides. It’s increasingly difficult to find these with their original straps, making this quite a rarity.

The interior is lined with a polished canvas type lining which is inscribed with a note in German which is difficult to read, but we can make out I. Cg. R.I.R., the latter standing for Reserve-Infanterie-Regiment. The last line reads 1915-18, meaning the writer was likely the soldier denoting his unit and from whence he wore this cap. The thin leather sweatband is present but there is cracking, tearing and detachment from the visor itself. A great research project. We estimate the size to be about a 56cm / US 7.

Despite the damage, this is a gorgeous example of a war-torn visor cap with tons of research potential on the interior. Don’t miss it!
