Item Description
Original Items: Only One Lot of 2 Available. These are both lovely examples of cloth “Good Luck” items, one being a Good Luck Flag with one signature and the other is a small souvenir flag likely taken home by a GI on Occupation Duty in 1946. The upper left side is marked with the Japanese phrase 久 長 運 武 祈, which reads Bu un Chou kyu Inoru ("A prayer that your military fortunes be long lasting.") This is written going "upward", and below this is 榊 神 社, which translates to "Sakaki Shrine" or something similar.
It is made of what appears to be rayon, with the red "sun" dyed into the middle. Overall the flag is in good condition with some tearing present and was likely carried by a Japanese soldier, with a single signature wishing him good fortune in his military career. This example measures 26 x 38”.
The writing is still clearly legible, and this would make a fine display piece for a wall or glass table, or even a translation project. The flag still has the original corner ties and leather tabs.
The smaller flag has Japanese and English names for Japan, Tokyo, Nagasaki, Okinawa, Yokosuga, Sasebo, and Yokohama. It is very small and was almost certainly painted for an American soldier on Occupation duty in 1946. This example measures 10½ x 13”.
A great pair of flags, ready to display!
