Gorgets hold an interesting place in history, as they are a throw-back to the days of knights, when suits of armor included a neck protection device called a Gorget. They have been used since that time to identify membership or function in various military and police organizations, and Gorgets were thoroughly used during the Third Reich.

This is lovely example of a rare Early NSDAP period Civic Police Standard Bearer's gorget, made from brass with a steel backing. The gorget is the usual "heart shape" we see for standard bearer gorgets, and measures approximately 5" wide by 5 ½" tall. The center bears the an 8 pointed star, which harkens back to the insignia used by Garde units during the days of the German empire, and is incorporated into many NSDAP era gorget designs. Surmounted on this is an early Prussian style NSDAP eagle with a swas on its chest. It holds a sword in the right claw and lightning bolts in the left, and is surrounded by a laurel leaf wreath. Above this is unit number 91.

The back still retains the original black felt fabric backing, which shows light wear and discoloration, as well as some light mothing. There is a bit of rust staining in areas, as the steel backing plate has corroded over the years. The brass front portion has a fantastic aged patina. These were hung around the neck, an the back still has the closed and open hooks for attachment. The non-magnetic chain has links that show a lovely embossed floral pattern, not the NSDAP type motifs that would be seen on later gorgets.

A lovely example of a very hard to find Police Gorget with exceptional eye appeal. Ready to research and display!
