  • Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. One of the most attractive uniform pieces from the Indian War period is absolutely the M1885 Mounted Greatcoat. This is a fantastic example appearing to have been made for a child to wear, with it being extremely small in size, but still high in manufacturing quality, with all real Federal Army buttons marked on the back to Horstmann of Philadelphia.

The greatcoat retains all of its U.S. general service eagle buttons, which have normal shields in the center instead of a letter denoting branch or company. There are no markings on the coat we could find. The cape is still intact and still correctly hooks into the loops on the collar for attachment. The attention to detail in this piece is astounding. The cape has no underlying color as they normally do which would indicate branch of service.

This is one of the most amazing children’s uniforms we’ve ever seen, and we don’t expect to ever see another like it. Comes ready for further research and display.
