Original Items. One-of-a-Kind Grouping. This is the tremendous medal & ephemera grouping of Staff Sergeant Robert Dean Byrne, Headquarters and Headquarters Company (HHC), Detachment B-55, Mike Force, 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne), who was wounded in action March 29th, 1970 by hostile fire, with multiple fragment wounds in his abdomen, with a possible left ulnar nerve palsy. The grouping includes his engraved medals, dog tag, Armed Forces card, award certificates, and more.
The grouping includes:
- Byrne’s Purple Heart in its original presentation case. The medal is machine engraved Dean Byrne, which is correct as his dog tag shows he preferred the name Dean over Robert. Case has the ribbon and pin as well.
- Byrne’s Purple Heart Certificate in its green War Office packet. The official certificate is included along with the General Order page listing the award.
- Byrne’s Engraved Bronze Star Medal with a V for Valor device. It is also engraved Dean Byrne.
- Byrne’s Engraved Air Medal.
- Byrne’s Air Medal Certificate in its green War Office packet. The official certificate is included along with the “Citation” page and the 5th Special Forces General Order listing its award.
- Byrne’s Engraved Commendation Medal.
- Byrne’s Engraved Denver Post Honor Award Medal dated November 11th, 1963, when he was a Corporal.
- Byrne’s Vietnam Service Medal and ribbon with two campaign stars.
- Byrne’s single dog tag on chain.
- Byrne’s sterling paratrooper wings by N.H. Meyer.
- Byrne’s Armed Forces of the United States ID Card with a great photo of him. The card was issued on September 13th, 1971 and shows very heavy use.
- A great photograph of Byrne in front of a 5th Special Forces Group sign overseas. It’s dated September 1969.
- Byrne’s Clinical Record Cover sheet which gives details about his wound, along with the issue of his Purple Heart by the 3rd Surgical Hospital General Order #50.
- Copy of Byrne’s Service Record showing his awards. Interestingly, the Bronze Star Medal is not listed, but this happens often, especially during the Vietnam era.
Robert Dean Byrne was born on March 22nd, 1936 in Kansas. He first joined the military around 1954, likely remaining in the Reserves until the Vietnam War. He joined for the war on September 13th, 1968 and served a combat tour in Vietnam lasting 8 months and 12 days before being severely wounded, giving him permanent disability. Byrne was well known among the Special Forces Veterans community. He passed away in October of 2019.
This is a fantastic grouping to a badass member of the 5th Special Forces group, ready for further research and display.
