Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice WWII issue Griswold bag, also called a Cover Jump, in heavy OD Green #7 canvas. The bag was designed to carry an M1 Garand rifle disassembled into three sections: barrel, stock, and trigger group. The bags were also used to carry the M1 Carbine, Thompson SMG, or M3 Grease gun. The bag was then attached to the T-5 Parachute harness using a carabiner sewn onto the bag. Wartime pictures also show the bags being wedged behind the harness to make it more comfortable to jump with.

Unfortunately, many complaints came from Normandy paratroopers, who lost precious seconds removing their weapon from the Griswold Bag and assembling and loading the M-1 while enemy troops approached.

This fine example has a full closure TALON zipper. On the rear side is the regulatory marking contract 8300-44 (44 is the manufacturing date) 2650. These bags were distributed to all airborne divisions engaged in Europe (17th, 82nd and 101st AB).

Unlike most that we see, this example still has the silver snap hook carabiner on the reverse, which attached the bag to a metal loop mounted high on the right chest portion of the main jump harness. It is very rare to see one of these still intact. It is still secured to the case with string as shown.

The case shows overall wear, but still has most of the original color, and shows minimal wear inside. The zipper is still fully functional. A great piece ready for display with an M1 Garand, M1 Carbine, Thompson, or M3 Grease Gun!
