Original Item: Only One Available. This is a fantastic WWII Italian Air Force Pilot’s Uniform complete with the jacket, breeches, and visor cap. The jacket is a stunning example with period pilot wings, a gorgeous ribbon bar, and a scarce Torpedo Bomber’s badge! These rarely come up for sale on the market, and this is only the second specimen we have ever had the pleasure of offering!
A beautiful, hand-tailored service dress tunic for a Capitano (Captain) of the Regia Aeronautica (the Italian Air Force from 1923 to 1943). The tunic is tailored from a medium blue-grey finished wool. Italian uniforms had a unique double buckle integrated belt for a trimmer fit and neater appearance.The Buckles on the waistband of this particular garment are handsomely fire blued. Unlike most Air Forces where officers bought their uniforms from private tailors, the Italians were often issued uniforms made by the government. This example has a private tailor’s tag for O. Celeghin in Torino, Via Urbano Rattazzi 11.
The jacket has two bullion stars sewn to the collar, and two vertical shoulder boards bearing a Knight’s helmet with red velvet piping. These are Aviation Pioneer (Engineer) boards. The Capitano ranks on each cuff have the same red velvet piping.
The uniform has a 7-place ribbon bar including the Order of the Crown of Italy with a rosette, the Medal for the Fascist Campaign 1919-1922, the Italian Africa Oriental Campaign Medal, the UN Korean Service Medal(?), the 16 Year Service Cross, the 1940-1943 Campaign medal with 3 Bullion stars, and the Italy Star. The pilot’s wings are in great shape and complement the uniform well. Below the ribbon bar on the breast pocket is an exceptionally scarce Torpedo Bomber badge.
The breeches are in great shape as well and go well with the uniform. The visor is in good condition with the condition reflecting signs of consistent service wear. The dark wool exterior is in excellent condition with very minor, if any moth nips present but does have staining present. The officers insignia on the front consists of a bullion Air Force insignia with laurels, eagle and crown at the top. The black visor on the front is in fair condition. The interior has a maker’s label with a Crown and S. CARDIA of ROMA. This is a fantastic uniform group.
