Item Description
Original Item. Only One Available. This is a scarce variant of cartridge box known as the No. 1 Hanger. Internally, the box has twenty-four canvas, bullet loops and a bulged out compartment, on the right side of the box, to house the M1868 combination, gun tool. The box was developed by Major P.V. Hagner and was submitted and subsequently approved by the Cavalry and Infantry Equipment Boards, in 1871 and 1872. These early, number 1, Hagner boxes had a characteristic “Y”-shaped yoke, on the back, through which the waist belt was passed.
This example is in great condition although the leather is a bit stiff. The canvas bullet loops are all intact and the front is embossed US. The hanger on the back is fully intact and the leather is a small bit crazed, but there is no serious cracking present. This is a very scarce model of cartridge box to find, used during the early 1870s.
This is a great example, ready for further research and display.
