Item Description
Original Items: Only One Group Available. Since the dawn of civilization, soldiers have engaged in the practice of acquiring items from opposing forces during times of war. This age-old tradition has been passed down through generations and continues to this day in modern military operations. During World War II, soldiers from allied forces would often swap uniform items such as insignia, patches, boots, and other equipment with soldiers from the opposing forces. Additionally, they would also obtain items worn and used by their enemies and send them back home as souvenirs and as evidence of their victories. This grouping exemplifies this time-honored tradition of military acquisition.
While most picture the "Pacific War" as being fought on a bunch of Tropical Islands, Japan itself has regions of cold, and they also invaded China and were aware of the threat if Russia were to attack. They also invaded the Aleutian Island chain portion of Alaska, which is anything but tropical.
The Items In This Lot:
- Imperial Japanese Army WWII Quilted Rabbit Fur Lined Winter Coat: . Fantastic condition IJA winter rabbit fur coat with internal quilting. Features rabbit fur lined sleeves, quilted body and fur trimmed cuffs and neck. Features double breasted front with 8 large bakelite buttons. Offered in very good to excellent condition.
- Imperial Japanese Winter Booties and Gloves: Both sets are in wonderful condition and show no signs of real use.
The paperwork pertaining to the items being brought home was for “War Trophies” brought home by Lt. Vernon M. Meintzer, a 1st Lieutenant with the 82nd Signal Bn. The document states all three items; Japanese Winter Coat, Boots, Felt Uppers and Winter Mittens.
82d Signal Battalion Lineage
-Constituted 1 July 1916 in the Enlisted Reserve Corps as a Signal Corps battalion
-Organized 19 September 1917 at Camp Gordon, Georgia, as the 13th Reserve Field Signal Battalion
-Called into active military service 5 October 1917; concurrently redesignated as the 307th Field Signal Battalion and assigned to the 82d Division
-Demobilized 22 May 1919 at Camp Morrison, Virginia
-Reconstituted 24 June 1921 in the Organized Reserves as the 82d Signal Company and assigned to the 82d Division (later redesignated as the 82d Airborne Division)
-Organized in February 1922 at Macon, Georgia
-Ordered into active military service 25 March 1942 and reorganized at Camp Claiborne, Louisiana
-Reorganized and redesignated 15 August 1942 as the 82d Airborne Signal Company
(Organized Reserves redesignated 25 March 1948 as the Organized Reserve Corps)
-Withdrawn 15 November 1948 from the Organized Reserve Corps and allotted to the Regular Army
-Reorganized and redesignated 1 September 1957 as Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 82d Signal Battalion (organic elements constituted 19 July 1957 and activated 1 September 1957 at Fort Bragg, North Carolina)
