Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. Gorgets hold an interesting place in history, as they are a throw-back to the days of medieval knights, when suits of armor included a neck protection device called a Gorget. They have been used since then to identify membership or function in various military and law enforcement organizations, and Gorgets were thoroughly used throughout the Third Reich. During WWII, Hungary was on the side of the Axis powers, and also issued gorgets for certain positions as Germany had.
This is a nice patinated example of a rare WWII Hungarian Military Police gorget, which were issued during the last days of WWII. It appears to be made of relatively thick stamped aluminum alloy, which shows a bit of wear and patination, and is totally non-magnetic. The front features a detailed Hungarian Coat of arms flanked by oak leaf sprigs. Below this emblem is a banner reading TÁBORI BIZTONSÁG, meaning literally “field security” or “camp security,” denoting military police. These are both riveted to the main body of the gorget, which measures 6 1/4" x 4".
The reverse of the gorget still retains the three flat hooks on the back, with an attached aluminum chain, very similar to the German Third Reich era gorgets. This allowed the gorget to be worn several different ways. Unlike the German gorgets however, these were usually issued without any type of backing cloth to cover the rivets, and there is also the serial number 16116 deeply stamped into the back.
This example looks to have seen light to moderate service, and is still in very good condition. The only real discrepancy is loss of of almost all of the dark paint around the text on the bottom of the gorget. These are exceedingly hard to find in any condition, and this is only the second example that we have been able to offer. Ready to research and display!
