Original British Napoleonic Stovepipe Shako Cap Plate Found on Island of Antigua - West Indies Service 1797-1802

Regular price $750.00

Item Description

Original Item. Only One Available. This is a lovely example of a British Stovepipe Shako cap plate, of the generic “GR” type adopted for the new shakos and tall hats worn by many British corps in the West Indies during the 1797-1802 period. This example was supposedly found on the island of Antigua, an island in the Bahamas often noted as Britain's "Gateway to the Caribbean". These cap plates continued in use until they were replaced by the 1802 “Universal” cap plate.

The plate measures 3 x 4” and is in good shape with some small areas of denting and wear. The entire plate has a lovely deep brownish-green patina. A gorgeous cap plate from the Napoleonic Era, ready for further research and display!
