Item Description
Original Items: Only One Available. This is a lovely example of a German WWII Luftwaffe Officer's Sword from a desirable maker with great aluminum fittings and a nickel plated blade. This is mid-war produced example, as early war examples were silver-frosted nickel alloy. As the war continued they moved to the "air-age" aluminum material, which was felt to be more appropriate.
The blade of this example measures 28 1/4 inches, and is in very good condition. It is fully nickel plated, and has not been sharpened, as is correct for these swords. It has the usual "runner wear" on the flats of the blade, which has not worn through the plating. It does show use however, which is not typical, as these are dress swords, not intended for use in battle. It looks like the sword may have been used in some type of "mock duel" after it was captured. There are numerous small scrapes, some of which go through the plating, and there is also light denting on both edges.
The sword was made by Paul Weyersberg of Solingen, the legendary "City of Blades" in western Germany. The reverse ricasso is etched with PAUL WEYERSBERG & Co. / SOLINGEN in double ovals around the firms trademark "Sword-and-Wreath" logo, which was the only marking they used during the Third Reich era. This company was one of many in Solingen owned by members of the Weyersberg family. The company survived the war, but ceased production in 1955. For more information please see GERMAN KNIFE AND SWORD MAKERS by J. Anthony Carter.
Above the trademark logo is an early war Weimar Eagle mark with a 5 inside, a common Luftwaffe inspection mark, who continued to use the Weimar style eagle throughout the war. The leather blade buffer is still present, and in great shape.
The fittings of this sword are bright aluminum, and show light wear and some minor scratching. The pommel still has good crisp edges with just a few dents, and the oak leaves on the sides are in excellent condition. The "broken sun cross" swass on the pommel and cross guard also retain virtually all of their original gilding, and look great. The cross guard arms are the downward sloping type being in three tiers and carved with lines to simulate feathering. These quillon arms still have good, crisp edges, with just a bit of wear. The hilt and associated fittings are tight to the blade, with no wobbling.
The grip is a fine blue Moroccan leather covered carved wood base. This leather is in good condition throughout and still has its original graining in the surfaces, with some areas that have wear through the leather finish, but not to the wood. The grip is wrapped with double twisted strands of silver bullion covered wire, which are in great shape.
The leather-covered non-magnetic metal scabbard of this example is straight throughout, and is covered with blue "moroccan" leather matching the handle. This is in great shape, with just a bit of denting and bruising, showing very light wear with no tears. The only real issue is that the leather has started to lift along the seam close to the throat fitting. The scabbard is equipped with upper and lower matching bright aluminum mounts. These mounts are in fine condition and are retained by headless, flush mount screws which are all in place. The original matching leather crescent hanger is also in place with no signs of rot, just a bit of finish wear. This crescent hanger is equipped with a closed matching aluminum box clip.
