Original Item: Only One Available. This is a really nice example of a Confederate Enlisted Man’s “Dog River” Cavalry Sabre, patterned after the U.S. model 1840 cavalry known as the "wristbreaker". They get the “Dog River” nickname because some of the unmarked cavalry sabers were made by the factory on the Dog River in Georgia or Alabama. The fact is that most of the swords that are unmarked with this nickname were made throughout the south at arsenals and retailers both large and small.
The sword has typical features seen with “Dog River” sabres, such as long tapered unstopped fuller, curved handle, and single crude iron wire wrap on the handle. Generally, “Dog River” Cavalry Sabres have wooden grips wrapped in oil cloth or crude leather. This particular Sabre is wrapped in crude leather. The leather is well worn, and matches the condition of the hilt.
At the base of the blade, the washer was lost eons ago so the handguard is wobbly but doesn't come off. It could be tightened up but we will leave that for you. The guard and pommel cap have a thick, beautiful untouched patina all over with the dark ancient “red brass” color patina. The pommel is stamped twice with 54E and 68, with a 103 stamped on the crossguard next to the ricasso. The blade is heavily rusted as these often are, without any discernable markings.
The scabbard is well made, with rivet-fastened flat-mouthed iron throat. The iron drag is nicely proportioned and the end of the scabbard tube is rounded rather than crudely squared. Both iron carrying rings are in place. This example appears to be closely modeled after the 1840 U.S. scabbard.
This is a very good Confederate cavalryman’s saber and scabbard, complete, all original, that displays very nicely and is recognizably southern from a long distance away. Comes ready for further research and display.
