Item Description
Original item: Only One Available. Here we have a very nice original Eagle Headed U.S. Officer's sword from the 1830s, right before the Mexican-American War. The sword is all brass mounted with an interesting two part "D" hand guard and a a very nice "closed mouth" Eagle pommel. The grip is carved ribbed bone, and while it does show age, we do not see any cracks or chips on it at all. The eagle's head is very well executed, with a lovely antiqued brass patina. It is however now loose on the blade, as is the crossguard.
The sword is 34 inches long overall, with a straight 29 1/2 inch single edged blade, with a broad fuller. It has a bright steel finish, and the original etching is still retained but very faded. There are foliate designs on both sides. It is also etched on both sides of the blade with the retailers name where it was purchased:
W.H. HORSTMANN
PHILADELPHIA
Horstmann's was a well known military outfitter in Philadelphia for many years, particularly during and after the Civil war, so we assume that this sword is from that era.
The sword comes with a gorgeous all-brass scabbard which is marked at the throat with serial number 423 over maker mark:
HORSTMANN
PHILADA.
The scabbard has a good amount of dents and dings which is to be expected from its ago, but it still presents rather nicely with a beautiful floral motif on the front. The two suspension rings are also retained.
A truly lovely U.S. sword with loads of patina, ready to display!
