Original U.S. NASA 1984 LDEF Framed Group of 5 Seed Packets Exposed to Space for 5 Years - Space Shuttles Challenger & Columbia

Item Description

Original Items. One-of-a-Kind. This is a really phenomenal group of seed packets which were in space for 5+ years. They were taken up in the LDEF (Long Duration Exposure Facility) aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger on April 6th, 1984, and were brought back to Earth aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia on January 20th, 1990. These seeds are already a phenomenal piece of NASA history, with the added factor of having been aboard both the Challenger & Columbia, the two Space Shuttles that met tragic fates on separate occasions.

The group includes a frame with printed photographs and a small biography explaining the purpose and story of the seeds. Three packs of the seeds are mounted on this frame, and two packs of seeds are loose. One of the loose packs of seeds did not go to space, and were instead part of the Earth-based control group to have them to compare the space seeds to. There are two seed packets from “Canister 4, Layer - C & D Mixed”, one from “Canister 3, Layer - C & D Mixed”, and one from “Canister 2, Layer A, B, C, & D Mixed”. The packets each measure 2½ x 4”. The frame the 3 are in measures 12½ x 15½”.

The grouping also includes two activity books meant for children involved in the SEEDS program. One of the books is a teacher’s guide. The packets came in a NASA envelope which is still included, measuring 12 x 9½”. The group also has a CD labeled LDEF which we assume contains information about the mission, but we haven’t checked it.

This is an amazing grouping of seeds that were actually in space for 5+ years, which is more than can be said for humans who need to return to Earth periodically. Comes ready for further research and display!
