Original U.S. WWII Navy Bearing Circle in Original Case by Lomar Instrument Company

Regular price $395.00

Item Description

Original Item. Only One Available. A "bearing circle" is a navigational instrument used to measure the angle between a reference point (usually true north) and a distant object, essentially allowing the observer to determine the direction of that object, often used in maritime navigation to take compass bearings by aligning sighting vanes with the target object and reading the angle on a compass repeater card; it is essentially a graduated circle with sighting mechanisms to take bearings.

This is a lovely example of a USN Bearing Circle manufactured by Lomar Instrument Company in Bloomfield, New Jersey. The data plate on the front reads:

U.S. NAVY-BUREAU OF SHIPS
U.S. NAVY BEARING CIRCLE
MARK 1 MOD. 2 N
CONTRACT NO. N104-19753A
LOMAR INSTRUMENT COMPANY, INC.
BLOOMFIELD, NEW JERSEY

The case measures 11½ x 11½ x 4½” and is in fair condition with some staining issues as shown, and some writing on the lid. The bearing circle may be missing some pieces, we aren’t sure. A nice set, ready for further research and display.
