Item Description
Original Item. Only One Available. This is a very nice French 2nd Empire Model 1852 Officer’s Sword complete with its brass-mounted leather scabbard. The sword is in fair condition but has some issues. The blade does not retain much of its original etchings. This is a very difficult model of sword to find, dating before the Franco-Prussian War.
The sword’s hilt is in fair condition with the brass still retaining some of its finish. The chape bears a right-facing eagle, and the reverse of the chape appears to be missing something which fit into it. The grip is wire-wrapped felt but the wire is very loose, although it does appear to be all-retained. The handguard is stamped 248, likely just a rack number.
The blade measures 31¾” long and shows past oxidation having been cleaned away. The blade was etched but there is not much of it remaining, having been cleaned away with the oxidation. The blade is still mostly tight to the hilt.
The blade ricasso is maker-marked by with a logo we are familiar with, a crown over a shield with a "Z" inside. This would later be the mark of Clemen & Jung, but per J. Anthony Carter's Fine Work GERMAN KNIFE AND SWORD MAKERS, this mark was originally used by H.W. Lang of Solingen, who registered it in 1851. However, in 1866 Lang transferred his business to his son-in-law Hermann Neuhaus, who then formed E. & H. Neuhaus with his brother Ernst, who traded until circa 1890. It was not until 1898 that the trademark was registered by Clemen & Jung. Definitely some interesting research potential here.
The brass-mounted leather scabbard measures 32⅞” and is in fair condition, although the throat is missing the knob and the leather is heavily crazed, with the majority of the stitching gone.
A fair example of what is becoming a very difficult sword to find from the French 2nd Empire. Comes ready for further research and display.
