Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This is a rare and highly desirable US WWII fighting knife that was coveted by US troops during the war. The knife was famously used by the Airborne Troops, including the "101st" and "82nd" Airborne divisions, and owning one was considered a badge of honor. This particular knife is a handmade example of the highest craftsmanship, with a solid steel blade and an excellent brass pommel with all the intact spacers. While there is minor use and sharpening present, it is clear that this knife has been well cared for and is perfect to display with any airborne mannequin or US equipment collector.
The knife was made by a legendary knife-maker, Frank Richtig, who had a secret steel tempering process that allowed him to slice through railroad spikes and automobile leaf springs. Frank would demonstrate this at county fairs, and after slicing a railroad spike or leaf spring, he would slice through a piece of paper with the same knife. Frank's superior craftsmanship ensured that these knives could be used for decades.
This knife measures 11" overall, with the blade itself measuring 6". The Richtig fighting knives with this handle configuration, is marked on the bottom of the heavy brass pommel with F.J.R. / CLARKSON / NEB.
Upon inspection, it is apparent that the knife has been well-maintained and has seen very little use. The scabbard shows some signs of wear, but it is not extensive. The hilt assembly, however, shows more wear, primarily in the tarnished brass fittings and the leather washer stacked handle. The blade of the knife is in excellent condition with very little wear, and much of the original cross-grain is still visible. It is evident that the knife has been taken care of and kept in good condition. The overall appearance is impressive, and it would make a valuable addition to any collection.
A lovely example ready for further research and display.
