Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This is a genuine Pattern 1861 pattern Federal issue leather cartridge box for .58 caliber Minié ball cartridges. It is missing the front plate, and does not have the internal tins. However, does have a very rare original Leather shoulder sling, complete with its brass Eagle Plate, which are very hard to find, and collectible in their own right.
The overall leather condition is good but worn, with the finish flaking in places and some dry rot. The tab hole is worn, but it still does latch around the bottom stud. The rear of the box still has both belt loops intact, as well as the loops for the shoulder strap, though it is not threaded through them at present. The box is marked under the front flap on the interior flap cover with:
WATERTOWN
ARSENAL
1863
There is unfortunately no inspection marking on the front, but on these cases finding ANY markings is an achievement. The interior flap cover is in very good condition and is complete with both ears. The bottom of the box has both roller buckles, though the leather around one is very worn and in delicate condition, with half already torn through. The front flap still has the outline of the missing front plate, complete with the two holes where the loops went through.
Offered in overall very good condition with signs of use and age. Ready to display!
