Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a great example of an Imperial German Model 1870/1889 Infantry Officer sword and scabbard.

The hilt is a gilded brass “D” shape guard with the Imperial German eagle of Kaiser Wilhelm II cypher emblazoned on the grip. The Imperial Eagle portion of the guard folds in or out, depending if needed or not. The hilt overall is stunning with a gold wash on the hilt and cypher. The grip is wrapped in brass wire, bound over celluloid-covered wood. The celluloid and brass wire wrap are in good condition with the wire being loose in several places. The original leather forefinger loop on the inside of the guard is missing. This example still retains most of the leather blade washer.

The nickel-plated straight blade is in very good condition and has a double fuller on each side. The blade is 29 1/4” inches from the spear point to the hilt. The blade has some wear to the plating with some scattered oxidation.

The sword ricasso is stamped with the trademark "Young Siegfried Wielding a Hammer" logo over P. O & Co., the markings used by Pack, Ohliger & Co. GmbH, Waffen - und Stahlwarenfabrik of Solingen, the legendary "City of Blades" in western Germany. This company was founded in 1910 by Friedrich Pack and Robert Ohliger and manufactured weapons and Steelware during the WWI Period. The company ceased to exist in 1922 when Ohliger left, and the company was taken over by Pack's son Ernst and his sons, forming Ernst Pack & Sohne, who continued to use the same "Young Siegfried" logo. This puts the sword FIRMLY in the WWI period. For more information please see J. Anthony Carter's find work GERMAN SWORD AND KNIFE MAKERS.

The steel scabbard has a single hanging ring, as the second fitting was for a hook on the hanger. It has the standard black enamel finish, which has worn off in some areas in the middle, and the underlying steel has oxidized. The scabbard is mostly straight, though it does have two dents on one side in the middle which do not interfere with placing the blade in the scabbard. The blade is very tight in the scabbard.

Overall condition is very good. Ready to display!
