Item Description
Original Items: One of a Kind Set. This is really a special item, the likes of which we have really not seen before. It is a 24" x 23" light gray scarf which was owned by a German POW being held in a U.S. POW camp. The scarf feels like it is made from rayon or a cotton rayon blend, and the reverse it has a POW name tag that reads as follows:
P.O.W. Obgfr: Alex. Klemm
81. G. 601504 H.
This is definitely a U.S. POW designation as used in American camps, and gives the prisoner's name and rank, most likely short for Obergefreiter Alexander Klemm. This is a senior enlisted rank equivalent to a U.S. Army Corporal, and the "G." and "H." in their POW number indicated German Heer (Army). We also noted that at the bottom of scarf is a handwritten name G. STERN, possibly a U.S. soldier stationed at the camp who received the scarf as a gift from the POW, not an uncommon occurrence.
The scarf itself has a machine stitched white 5 pointed star outline, inside of which are a variety of different German Wehrmacht insignia, which are from the Heer Army, Luftwaffe Air Force, and other German organizations, numbering 14 items in total.
These include the following items:
- One German WWII Luftwaffe Air Force Medical Personnel's Round Sleeve Trade Badge
- One PAIR of German WWII Schutzpolizei Green Litzen style Collar tabs with Silver Bullion borders.
- One German WWII Heer Army Panzer Black Uniform Danziger Totenkopf (Death's Head) collar tab, probably field made. This was probably attached to a "Panzer Wrap" tunic.
- One German WWII Heer Army Later War BeVo Embroidered Breast Eagle.
- One German WWII Luftwaffe Air Force Red Artillery Flieger (Airman) rank collar tab.
- TWO German WWII Army Heer Signals Personnel Sleeve Specialty badges, one with a black lightning bolt for Pioneer Troops, and one with a Red lightning bolt for Artillery.
- One German WWII Luftwaffe Air Force Air Raid Warning Personnel's Round Sleeve Trade Badge.
- One German WWII Luftwaffe Air Force Motor Vehicle Driver's Round Sleeve Trade Badge
- One German WWII Luftwaffe Air Force Motor Transport Equipment Administrator's Round Sleeve Trade Badge
Additionally, there are three small round badges with attached white stars, which we have not been able to identify. They are on Luftwaffe fliegerblau backings, so we assume they are Air Force related. We can also see that there was originally a badge in the very center, and four diamond shaped badges near the corners of the scarf, which were all removed at some point, leaving only the stitch holes. With this item we received the 2007 listing from when it sold previously, and it was definitely missing those insignia at that time, and doe snot look to have changed at all since then.
A very intriguing piece of WWII POW Memorabilia with some great research potential. Ready to add to your collectin!
