Original German WWII Pioneer Saw with Scarce Tan Preßstoff Case - cdg 43

Item Description

Original Item. Only One Available. This is an extremely scarce German WWII Pioneer Saw in the rarest variation - with a tan Presstoff case. Presstoff was a scarce ersatz material used in Germany during World War I and World War II. It was made from specially layered paper pulp, which was then treated with a specific resin that would bind it together in layers.

The saw itself is nicely marked Marke Steigo H 1942. The case is marked with acceptance mark (Waffenamt) and cdg 43, for Auwaerter & Bubeck KG, Stuttgart, Hasenbergstrasse. They were a well known maker of holsters and other cases.

The saw measures 21½” overall with a 16½” sawblade. The case measures 17¼” with a 4” belt loop.

The saw shows heavy use and has some oxidation on the handle and saw as shown. It fits well into the case but has some resistance when being pulled out. The case is in great shape and still retains the loop tab for the bayonet. The tan paint is in fantastic shape and displays beautifully. This is the first Pioneer saw we have ever offered, and one of the first we’ve ever seen with the extremely scarce Prestoff case. Don’t miss out on this stunning example. Comes ready for further research and display.

Presstoff (also Preßstoff or Pressstoff) is the German-language term for a type of ersatz or artificial leather used during the first half of the 20th century. Made of specially layered and treated paper pulp, Presstoff was durable and easily adapted to be used in place of leather, which under wartime conditions was rationed. First invented in the 19th century, it gained its widest use in Germany during the Second World War.

Presstoff use included but was not limited to binoculars cases and straps, horse tack, bayonet frogs, equipment belts, cap visors etc. In short, Presstoff could be used in almost every application normally filled by leather, excepting items like footwear that were repeatedly subjected to flex wear and/or moisture. Under these conditions Presstoff tended to delaminate and lose cohesion.
