Item Description
Original Item: One of a Kind. This is a lovely 18th Century flintlock pistol originating from one of the Germanic States or elsewhere in Northern Europe, made circa 1720-1740. It is all iron mounted, including the characteristic large German brass side plate, and measures 18 inches in overall length, with a 11 inch .75" caliber smoothbore barrel. It looks to have seen a good amount of use, and there are no markings present on the barrel or lock. It has no provision for a ramrod, common for the period, as often it would be attached to the rider somehow so it could not be lost.
The stock has some nice carving around the fittings, which is a bit worn from use. The grip terminates in a lovely long eared butt cap, and the lock work is definitely robust. It is an early design without a support bridle from the flash pan to the frizzen. We can see what look like some repairs on the right side near the nose band, which may be there just to stabilize the repair, but no major damage elsewhere. There is a bit of wood worm damage on the rear left near the barrel tang. The lock is fully functional, holding at half cock and firing at full.
A lovely mid 18th Century Flintlock Horse pistol from the German area, ready to research and dispay!
