Original Set. Only One Available. The Auxiliary Territorial Service was the women's branch of the British Army during the Second World War. It was formed on 9 September 1938, initially as a women's voluntary service, and existed until 1 February 1949, when it was merged into the Women's Royal Army Corps. Unlike its predecessor, the QMAAC, whose members were firmly labelled as volunteers, the ATS was granted full military status from April 1941. However, ATS women were still not allowed to undertake combat roles.
Following this advancement, conscription was extended to include women in December 1941. All women conscripted into the Army entered the ATS, except for nurses, who joined Queen Alexandra’s Imperial Military Nursing Service (QAIMNS).
This is a fantastic example of a uniform jacket for a worker in the ATS, along with her peaked cap with an ATS insignia, and her tie. The uniform jacket is of the British “Battledress” style. The jacket has A.T.S. insignia on both shoulders as well as the North Midland District Formation patches, depicting an archer about to shoot an arrow on a green background. The uniform also bears the cord of the ATS, which is on the left shoulder and connects to the left breast pocket. There are two pips on the shoulder boards, indicating the ATS rank of 1st Subaltern. There is a size tag behind the front buttons, with a maker’s mark for J. HARVEY, LTD. in London, and is dated 1942.
The included Peaked Cap has a great ATS cap badge on the front and is in good shape overall. There’s a great stamp on the interior reading:

This is a marvelous example of a very scarce British WWII Female uniform set, ready for further research and display.
