Item Description
Original Item: One-of-a-kind. This is a lovely early 18th century crossbow from the European Continent, featuring a gorgeous fruitwood stock, shaped much like a gun stock. It features a gorgeous built-in spanner which is built into the length of the buttstock, with a knob at the back to raise it forward. The crossbow features steel fittings of butt plate, trigger guard, side plates, nose fitting, and even the "lock" mechanism that holds the string back. The flight groove on top is well executed though it is not lined with metal or horn. The "bow" portion is in great shape without any serious damage. The crossbow also features a great front sight which folds down.
The firing mechanism has a plate that holds the string in place connected to the built-in spanner, and pulling the trigger causes it to pop up, releasing the string. This mechanism also includes a 5-hole rear sight which is just fabulous. There is also a small wing nut under the nose cap, which pushes this fitting upwards. Stock measures approximately 30½" long by 1 1/4" wide and 4" tall. The bow has a 29” span.
Condition is very good, with exceptional eye appeal. The stock appears in good shape, but the firing mechanism could use some work, as it may not function as intended. We definitely do not recommend any attempts at using the crossbow. It is being sold as a display piece only.
