Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This is a fine example of a 19th century, circa 1830, sporting shotgun in .75 Caliber partially constructed by Steele of Albany New York. The barrel was manufactured in London, England and bear Birmingham Proofs. The barrel is marked on the flat LONDON FINE TWIST and is comprised of aesthetically stunning Damascus steel, with a vibrant striped pattern offered in excellent condition. The percussion lock is mechanically sound and holds at half cock, is nicely engraved with floral motifs and marked STEELE ALBANY. This indicates that the gun was assembled for the American market and sold by the well known New York State gun maker JOHN STEELE 1820 - 1830s, which became WARREN & STEELE in the 1830s-1850 and finally STEELE & LATHROP in the 1850s-1860s.
The stock is nicely checkered at the wrist, with iron fittings. The barrel bore is bright and smooth with only minor darkening in spots indicating very light use. The underside the barrel has multiple markings including GF HR H&S and the proof marks used from 1813 until 1904 were the crossed scepters and crown mark, incorporating the letters BPC (Birmingham Proof Company), together with the crossed scepters over a V.
Overall a very nice American "trade" sporting gun comprised of imported parts and assembled in the United States from the early half of the 19th century.
