Original Item. Only One Available. This is a tremendous example of the scarce Model 1876 Campaign Hat with “Citrus” vents and a hat cord. This pattern was adopted by the War Department on Flag Day, 1876, less than two weeks before Custer's disaster at the Little Bighorn. The first contract was let to John T. Waring & Co. of Yonkers, N.Y. for 15,000 hats. The contract was too late to save Waring which went bankrupt before the end of the year. In any event, because of the existing stocks of the model 1872, the model 1876 was not actually issued until 1877.This example is in fantastic shape, still retained most of its hat band although there are areas of material loss. The hat cord is still attached via string on one side. The hat retains its original sweatband which is marked Dakota. The sweatband retains much of its stitching although some may have been repaired. The hat has very little moth damage, but there is heavy wear to the material, especially under the brim.There are some small holes in the material around the body. The size is roughly a Size 7, maybe 7¼. This is a tremendous example of one of the most sought after models of Campaign hat. Comes ready for further research and display!
