Original U.S. War of 1812 Era Engraved Officer's Eagle Head Sword with Carved Bone Grip

Regular price $695.00

Item Description

Original item: Only One Available. Here we have a very smart looking, original Eagle-Headed U.S. Officer's sword from the Early 19th century, the style matching those issued after the War of 1812 up into the late 1820s. It features a lovely aged and cracked carved bone grip as well as a gold highlighted engraved blade, which must have been quite spectacular when originally issued. The sword is all brass mounted with a "box" guard featuring floral designs, and a very nice "open beak" Eagle pommel. This example is maker-marked on the ricasso to B.I. BROWN & CO. BOSTON WARRANTED

The grip is quite loose, due to the splitting and cracks, as well as possible shrinking due to age. The hand guard is also very loose and cracked with some sections missing, and the original gilding on the brass is present but mostly gone.

Overall the sword is 36 1/8 inches long, with a 31 1/4 inch long engraved single edge curved saber blade. There is some scattered light staining and surface oxidation on the blade, as well as near the cross guard. The very tip of the sword has unfortunately broken off, but this doesn’t detract from the beauty of the piece.

This is a lovely, rather difficult sword to find from the War of 1812 era. Comes more than ready for further research and display!
