Item Description
Original Item: One Set Only. Directly out of the attic! This is an original WWI Era Staff Officer's "Gimp" Belt, with a lovely gilt rectangular plate buckle bearing the GVR Royal Cypher of King George V under a "King's Crown". Under this is the motto of the British Royal Family: DIEU ET MON DROIT which means GOD IS MY RIGHT, a reference to the "Divine Right" of royalty to rule. The buckle has a hook on the back, which attaches to a loop on the other end.
Like most "Gimp" belts, it is constructed of a folded leather body with gold "gimped" embroidery attached to the front. The belt has its gold buckles and sliders in place, however the gold embroidered cloth portion has had the edge seams pop on almost all of the belt, so it is separated from the leather backing.
In the current setup it measures approximately 36 inches from the hook to the other buckle, but looks like it was originally intended to be much shorter, as there are grommets on the reverse where the adjustment slider hook is supposed to attach. It would probably be around 30 inches when in the correct setup.
A lovely belt from the WWI area, a fantastic display piece!
