Original Items: Only One Set of Two Available. This is a lovely set of brass mounted flintlock vest pistols from the European Continent, most likely made in Belgium or Germany. They do not have any visible maker or proof marks, so they were lost likely made by a local gunsmith to order for a customer. They have some nice engraving on the metal components, and look to have been made at the turn of the 19th century.
Both pistols feature a 3 inch long round barrels that become faceted at the breech, and measure 6 3/4 inches in overall length, the perfect size to fit in a vest or coat pocket. Both have relatively early design locks, which do not have any bridle from the pan to reinforce the frizzen hinge. They are both in approximately .44" caliber, though one is slightly larger than the other, possibly due to wear. The pistol with the larger bore has a fully functional lock that holds at half cock, while the smaller bore pistol will fire at both full and half cock.
They are both in lovely patinated condition, showing staining on the iron and steel components, but no major rust or oxidation. The stocks are in good shape, showing some small cracks and other issues consistent with age and use. Both have small wooden ramrods under the barrels, which may have been replaced at one point, with one being just a bit too long.
A lovely matched pair of Continental Flintlock Vest Pistols, ready to research and display!
