Item Description
Original Items: One of a Kind Pair. This is magnificent matched pair of mid 18th Century German flintlock pistols, both marked with P. BECHER on the lock plates and A WÜLTZBURG on the tops of the barrels. This is a known maker from the Lower Franconia region of what was then the kingdom of Bavaria, and today we believe is spelled as Würzburg. This is one of several known members of the Becher family of gunsmiths, with others such as Leopold Becher being noted. This maker looks to have specialized in "All Brass Fitted" pistols such as this, with the only iron parts being the cross pins and smaller components of the lock. We have found another example from this maker, and the style is undeniable, especially with regards to the shape of the lock plate.
The pistols are identical in style and fittings, and definitely were made as a matched pair. They have the characteristic large German brass side plate, and measure 16 inches in overall length, with a 10 inch .546" caliber smoothbore barrels. The stocks have some nice carved embellishments around the fittings, and shows only light wear. The grips terminate in a lovely "grotesque mask" butt caps, which are heavily engraved and hand enhanced. The locks are both robust, even though they are an early design without a support bridle from the flash pan to the frizzen. Both are fully functional, holding at half cock and firing only at full.
Both pistols are in really great shape, with a lovely look to the brass, and just a bit of oxidation on the iron components. The stocks are in good shape, though both show some cracking through the grip portions, which is very common due to the amount of grain runout in those areas. Both have brass fitted ramrods under the barrel, which are easily removed.
A magnificent pair of mid 18th Century German Flintlock Pistols by P. Becher, with a fantastic mellow patina on the metalwork. This will make a great addition to any European firearms collection. Ready to research and display!
