Item Description
Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. Barnabas Collins is one of the most prolific villains in television history, becoming the antagonist and later protagonist of the show Dark Shadows which ran from 1966 to 1971, with a myriad of revivals and spinoff films following the original run. Most photos of Barnabas feature his iconic silver wolfhead cane. Highly visible throughout the series, this iconic piece rarely left the debonair vampire's side. Not only is this the cane used by Barnabas, it is the original cane which inspired its use. Along with the cane is a 1972-Dated letter from Sy Tomashoff, the scenic designer of Dark Shadows, typed on the Official ABC Studio letterhead. Tomahoff purchased the cane at an antique shop in Paris, France in 1962, being told that it was from the 1920s and had German hallmarks. He had no idea at the time that it would eventually be used as a model for the Barnabas cane.
Barnabas is quoted in the show referring to this very cane: “We like to think of it as representing a savage beast tamed and made familiar, a servant almost, dedicated to assisting us in something so common and civilized as a casual evening stroll.”
The cane measures roughly 33” long and 6” wide at the handle, with several silver German hallmarks stamped into the end of the silver handle. There is no further information about its origin other than it was crafted in Germany during the 1920s, one of the most devastating periods in German history. The bottom of the cane appears to be some sort of horn.
This is likely the greatest artifact to be found from the show, as this exact cane has been reproduced countless times over the years, with high-end reproductions costing in the range of $600-$800. Don’t miss out on this rare chance to acquire the cane that served as inspiration for the one carried by one of the nastiest villains of all time (Ranked #8 on TV Guide’s List of the 60 Nastiest Villains of All Time). Dark Shadows has amassed a cult following over the past half-century, with the original run amassing a staggering 1,225 episodes! Comes ready for further research and display!
Barnabas Collins is a fictional character, a featured role in the ABC daytime serial Dark Shadows, which aired from 1966 to 1971. Barnabas is a 175-year-old vampire in search of fresh blood and his lost love, Josette. The character, originally played by Canadian actor Jonathan Frid, was introduced in an attempt to resurrect the show's flagging ratings, and was originally to have only a brief 13-week run. He was retained due to his popularity and the program's quick spike in ratings, and virtually became the star of the show.
A defining feature of Barnabas' character development is his gradual but persistent transformation from a sinister, frightening creature of the night into the show's protagonist, who selflessly, heroically and repeatedly risks his "life" to save the Collins family from catastrophe.
