Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. "The Hakim," an Arabic term signifying "judge, ruler, or governor," refers to an enhanced Egyptian iteration of the Swedish Automatgevär m/42. After the 1952 Egyptian Revolution, General Gamal Abdul Nasser initiated a campaign to modernize the Egyptian military. This involved procuring manufacturing equipment, tooling, and initial technical support from Sweden to construct an Egyptian variant of the Ag m/42. This marked the inception of Egypt's domestic small-arms industry, and a total of around 70,000 rifles would be produced.
As with many countries, they looked to acquire some practice rifles that were cheaper to use in training than the actual Hakim, and first turned to Beretta in Italy to acquire some .22 trainers. They then decided to go with Air Pellet rifles, and contracted with J. G. Anschütz of Germany to produce an air pellet trainer version of the Hakim. This company still exists today, having been originally founded in 1856 by Julius Gottfried Anschütz. They had produced sporting and pellet rifles during the NSDAP period, at which time the company operated in Zella-Mehlis, home to several other air rifle manufacturers. This however became part of East Germany, and the company was essentially defunct from 1945 to 1950, when it opened up again with a new headquarters in Ulm.
The training air pellet rifle they designed is a spring piston underlever design, heavily based on their Model 1954 pellet rifle. It was designed to be the same weight and basic dimensions as the Hakim, and it looks like contracts were made in 1954 and several years afterwards. This example does have the Eastern Arabic date of ١٩٥٥ (1955) on the end of the receiver, so it is possible that is the year or manufacture or possibly the model. It also does have what we believe is a serial number on the front right receiver, which reads ٠٢٢٨٨, or 02288. There are not any accurate records of exactly how many of these trainers were made, even from the manufacturer.
Condition is very good, showing the expected wear from use in service, including scratches, dents, dings, etc. There are no major cracks or other issues, and the metalwork still retains much of the original finish. Both sling swivels and the rear sight are present, though they are made from sheet steel and may be slightly bent. The lever is still able to cock the rifle, which opens the loading door for the .22 pellet at the same time. It then does dry fire but we have no idea if it actually still is functional.
A very interesting German made training rifle from the 1950s, ready to research and display!
