Original Item: Only One Available. This is a wonderful example of an extremely difficult to find German gas mask from WWII. This gas mask was used on the various types of horses and mules that were “employed” by the German military during WWII. Horse gas masks were first used during World War I to protect horses from harmful chemical agents. Horses were the primary mode of transporting men and material to war zones and needed protection from irritating chemicals like chlorine and phosgene, used during that time. Like most horse respirators, this mask was probably used in conjunction with a gas proof cape and leggings.

The rubber gas mask itself is dated 40 on the side, over G and a Waffenamt WaA104 inspection marking. The top of the "nose" is marked G2, for a size 2 (medium), and under this is bwz, the three letter code for Auer-Gesellschaft AG, Werk Oranienburg outside of Berlin. This company manufactured many gas masks during the war, as well as components for other companies. Previous examples of these masks that we have had were made by Draeger, so having one by the well-known Auer is a real treat! Looking inside the mask, we can see some markings on the filters themselves, though we cannot quite make out what they say. 

The rubber of the mask is still soft but does have surface cracking present on straps that hold the filters in place. There is also some paint loss and oxidation on the metal fittings. The leather harness is still in great shape, having been protected inside the case and mask for decades.

The canvas carry case is still in very good condition, though the leather components definitely show some age and dry rot. One of the rear securing straps is missing, and the front strap is only attached on one side. Both closure straps on the front are torn, and no longer secure the case closed. The rear of the case is marked with bwz / Gr.2, indicating a size two mask made by Auer. There is a 41 date in the lower left, and another Waffenamt WaA104 stamp in the lower right.
