Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This is an incredible example of an early WWI Imperial German Feldmütze which features a Grand Duchy of Hesse cockade. This example is in fantastic condition with few flaws.
This cap is constructed of a fine dark blue wool with red piping around the top circumference and a 1” red wool band going around the lower circumference of the cap as well. The front features two lovely single piece stamped cockades as used by Mannschaften “other ranks”. The Mannschaften (Other Ranks) Kokarde was stamped one-piece metal painted in the national colors with two holes on the front to allow it to be sewn to the Feldmütze. In 1842 they introduced a Preußen Kokarde in the national colors of black/white/black which was worn on the center of the Feldmütze band, though this one is above the band. The red band features the cockade for the Grand Duchy of Hesse in white with a red band and white center. Both cockades are retained quite nicely and without any extensive damage.
The exterior exhibits a lovely color with minimal fading and scattered moth nips. The interior lining is a cream colored heavy cotton which does have some fraying present but it is still fully attached with no stitching loss. The leather sweatband is in great shape overall and is not detached. There was a marking on the interior that has since faded away. Size is approximately 56-57cm (7-7 1/8 US).
This is a wonderful example of a hard to find Imperial German field cap. Comes more than ready for further research and display.
