Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very fine example of a Model 1915 Bavarian Enlisted Man’s Greatcoat in Feldgrau, with intact shoulder straps indicating Kraftfahr-Battalion, or Motor Transport. One of the nicest WWI greatcoats we have offered.
Imperial German Feldgrau uniforms are incredibly hard to find, especially Enlisted Uniforms. Aside from the attrition of clothing worn in the trenches, much was burned as a result of the Spanish Influenza Pandemic and lice infestations. What survived was either worn out by veterans who repurposed their old uniforms as everyday clothing following the bleak years during the massive depression that raged throughout Germany, or, was simply repurposed or converted for use with the Reichswehr. It is for these reasons that on the collector’s market today Imperial German Officer’s uniforms are far more common than enlisted. While enlisted uniforms were either destroyed, worn out, or repurposed, officers' uniforms, on the other hand, were generally preserved by the veterans and their families, who could simply afford to do so.
This exceptional specimen is complete, with all of the vaulted smooth buttons. It still retains both Kraftfahr-Battalion shoulder straps, although both of the original buttons are missing, so they are only stitched in and not buttoned. The interior retains several stamps, including a very faint depot stamp reading BA III, indicating III Armee-Korps (Berlin), with a date of 1916. There are basic size stampings along with two purple colored stamps which may be for a costume house from after the war, although of this we aren’t certain.
Exterior condition is very good, with some mothing in places and some heavy wear and loss to the bottom edge of the coat as shown. Interior lining is exceptionally clean, and is marked with the aforementioned stamps. The later stamps are most likely from when this garment was possibly found in a military warehouse in the 1930s.
