During WWI, every nation involved fielded bolt action rifles as their primary weapon, with capacity ranging from 3 to 10 rounds, with the most common being five or six (Some Mannlicher clip fed guns held 6 round such as the Italian Carcano). While the British happily got by with their 10 round SMLE's, the Germans stuck with 5 round Mauser rifles looked to increase their firepower. Thus was born what is commonly known as the "Trench Magazine", a 20 round magazine that was fitted to a standard GEW 98 Mauser.

These were introduced to German soldiers in 1916, and were generally unpopular with troops as they were difficult to use outside of a static position. Studies show that they were primarily utilized by sentries or snipers who were stationed in static positions.

This is a great ground dug example of the scarce 20-round “Trench Mag”. It measures 5½ x 3¾ x 1¼” and is in fair condition for having been ground dug. There are some holes in the metal and it appears to have been repainted at one point, which has given it a nice darkened look. The small tab on the left is still intact. This would look fantastic paired with a wartime Gewehr 98. The magazine plate would be unscrewed and this would be inserted in its place. With some cleaning, this example could possibly be attached for display purposes!

These are extremely scarce to find in any condition, and original undug examples go for upwards of thousands of dollars. Here’s a chance to get one at a good price for display!
