Item Description
Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is a lovely Japanese photo album with many photos of family and soldiers in uniform, certainly put together by a Japanese soldier during the war. This album is notable due to almost every page with photographs having been stamped with a large purple stamp that reads:
EXAMINED IN THE FIELD
PASSED BY
P.R.B.
JOINT INTELLIGENCE
These stamps were done by an officer who was examining the album to ensure that it didn’t contain any intelligence information that would be valuable to the war effort, before giving it back to the soldier who captured it. The album contains about 44 photographs total with some small bits of ephemera as well. Only about 9 of the pages are filled, with the others all empty.
The album is in rough condition with the majority of the pages having come off of the spine. The front of the album shows a lion with Album below it. It measures roughly 7½ x 10”. The photographs in the album show many different Japanese soldiers, most of whom are in the Army, with some photos of sailors as well. Some photos show men posing in front of a river or mountain, with many studio portraits of soldiers and one photo of a soldier reading. There is a piece of Ribbon which reads “Selector’s Medal”, and some other small bits of ephemera. There is also a photo of soldiers holding rifles. There are two small certificates which could be researched.
This is a fantastic album with great research potential both as a Japanese album and a U.S. captured album. Comes ready for further research and display.
