Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This is a lovely little brass mounted flintlock pistol, which looks to have been made in Italy using a Spanish barrel, possibly from previously existing gun. Most Spanish pistols we have seen from the late 18th century used miquelet style locks, while this has an Italian flint lock, which even has a frizzen reinforcement bridle on the pan. The stock shows some lovely carving around the barrel tang, lock, and all of the fittings, making it quite lovely.
The lock plate is marked with stylized name Possiero, who research shows was an Italian maker, though there is very little information on them. The facets on the top of the barrel show three stamped Fleur-de-lis proofs covered with gold, with a recessed gold plated touch mark on the top that reads:
(Crown)
BVS
TIN
DVI
"Bustindui" is a very well known name in the Spanish gun-making city of Eibar, with multiple known members, including Jusepe, Juan Esteban, and Agostino. Often there would be an abbreviation above their name indicating which member of the family it was, however this example does not have any such marking. Definitely some very nice research potential in this pistol!
The pistol has an overall length of 10 inches, and is fitted with a 5 1/4 inch smoothbore barrel with a caliber of approximately .62". There is an iron cleaning rod under the barrel, which is most likely not original, as we would expect a ramrod for a muzzle loader. The two stage part octagonal barrel shows a lovely aged polished patina, with some lovely engraving near the change from octagon to round. The brass fittings have a beautiful mellow glow, with some fantastic engraved designs on all. Definitely must have taken sometime to complete all these fine ornamentations!
The stock still shows the original carving around the metalwork as well, with some checkering on the grip portion. It does however show overall wear, and there is some missing wood near the muzzle. There is also a crack through the whole stock an inch through the muzzle, which has not been repaired, and is held in place by the ramrod pipe. We checked the lock action, and it is fully functional, holding at half cock and firing at full.
A lovely late 18th Century Spanish - Italian flintlock pistol, ready to research and display!
