Original Rare Prussian Dreyse M-1860 Brass Hilted Fusilier Bayonet by A. & E. Höller with Regimental Markings

Item Description

Original item: One Only. This is an Exceptionally RARE Prussian Bayonet, made for the M-1860 Dreyse Needlefire Fusilier Rifle. The Zündnadelgewehr (ignition needle rifle) was the invention of Johann Nicolaus von Dreyse, a German gunsmith from the Prussian region. This design was the first breech loading fiream design to use bolt-action to open and close the chamber. The design was use during the middle portion of the 19th century, when the M1860 Dreyse Fusilier model was put into service. For more information please see Watts & White's fine work THE BAYONET BOOK, Page 110, Item 238.

This bayonet for the Füs.s M1860 is in very good condition, and features a "quill back" blade almost 20 inches long, with an overall length of 25 inches. This particular model was only made in 1861-1862, and is indeed marked with CROWN F W over 61, which is itself over a crown "A". These same markings are found on the reverse hooked quillon. The F W is the mark of King Friedrich Wilhelm IV, the King of Prussia, who passed away the same year.

The cross guard is also marked with the regimental marking F. R. 35. 5. 8., for the 35th (Brandenburg) Fusiliers "Prince Henry of Prussia" Regiment, raised in 1815 an garrisoned in Brandenberg. This is exactly the type of regimental marking that this bayonet should have.

The blade ricasso bears the original makers mark:

A. & E. HÖLLER
SOLINGEN

Per J. Anthony Carter's fine work GERMAN SWORD AND KNIFE MAKERS, A. & E. Höller began operations sometime in the 1840s, and by the 1850s was large enough to employ British agents for their export business. The company is known for making export bayonets for the British, as well as specifically the Prussian Pfm. 1855 and Füs.s M1860 bayonets. The company stopped trading sometime in the 1870s, and some of its trade marks were acquired by Weyersberg Kirschbaum.

This is a truly great collector's opportunity to purchase an excellent condition rare bayonet made by a rare maker from the most famous edged weapon making region of Germany.
