Original U.S. 19th Century Starr 1864 Patent .32 Rimfire 4 Barrel Tip Up Brass Frame Pepperbox Pistol - Matching Serial 5

Regular price $1,995.00

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is exactly what the Mississippi gamblers carried on the River Boats after the Civil War for self protection! A contemporary of the Sharp's four barrel pistol produced in the same era, the Starr which we offer here was fitted with a SIDE MOUNTED HAMMER. It is marked faintly on the round action cover with:

STARR’S PAT.S
MAY 10 1864

The pistol is also marked with serial number 5 on the bottom of the barrel assembly, on the top of the action, and on the inside of BOTH wooden grip scales. That makes this a very nice "ALL MATCHING" example, with no parts swapped out over the years! The action revolves the firing pin housing and NOT the hammer head as on the Sharps version. Press button on the left hand side releases the four barrels to pivot forward for loading. The pistol features a circular button checkered steel push trigger. All in all an improvement over the Sharps edition.

Overall metal finish is a nice gray patina on the barrels, while the frame is a lovely matured brass color, worn from the original nickel plating. Removal of the grips shows that the plating is still present on the grip frame, and there is also some remaining on the top of the action under the barrel. The flat bottom grip is very nice, with two lovely walnut scales, which were checkered post manufacture, and then varnished, preserving them wonderfully. The pistol barrel pivot works great, and locks back securely into place. The advance lever for the rotating firing pin works well on this example, but may require a bit of adjustment. We checked the bores, and they all show clear lands and grooves with a bright finish. There is a bit of wear and past fouling, but overall these are very nice for one of these very hard to find pistols.

A real favorite of River Boat Gamblers and for self defense. From America's Western history. In very nice presentable condition, ready to display!
