Original Item. Only One Available. This is one of the scarcest pieces of Civil War militaria we have ever offered, an original Officer’s single breasted frock coat with original Artillery lieutenant shoulder boards. This coat is a strong example of a rarely encountered piece of clothing from the Civil War, Federal service. We likely won’t ever see one in this condition again. The black velvet collar is in great condition.
The coat is constructed of a fine grade of English, broadcloth wool, in a deep, indigo-dyed blue. The front retains its 9 buttons, with two on the back, and the 6 small cuff buttons feature an A in the shield, for Artillery. This is reinforced by the two red Lieutenant’s shoulder boards which are pinned to the shoulders. The boards are both in great shape minus some small moth nips. The back of the coat is missing two of the lower buttons. The buttonholes are hand-whipped and corded.
Please note the correct bowed sleeves, which is seen on most examples of wartime manufacture officer’s frock coats. The coat is padded and there is a large breast pocket on left side. There is a hanging loop at the inside neck line, and the collar is lined with velvet. The interior lining is in great shape for its age but does show damage as is expected. The interior leather buckle strap are both intact and in fair shape, with the brass buckle still intact as well. There is a deep pocket in each coattail. The lining of the coat is in fair shape overall with multiple tears and rips, but nothing terribly serious. The exterior has the expected wear and staining, but it really displays like a dream.
The backs of the cuff buttons are marked T.N. DALE & CO of New York. Most of the front buttons are marked EXTRA QUALITY with some being marked to STEELE & JOHNSON. The coat exhibits a combination of treadle machine and hand sewn construction, with most of the buttons having been resewn after falling off. This is a superior example of a Federal, Civil War, Cavalry officer’s frock coat.
This is the scarcest Civil War uniform we have ever offered, and one we likely won’t ever offer again. Comes ready for further research and display.
